What is sustainability?

Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

This definition was created in 1987 at the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission). It is enshrined in the Swiss federal constitution. It is similar to the “seventh generation” philosophy of the Native American Iroquois Confederacy, mandating that chiefs always consider the effects of their actions on their descendants seven generations in the future.

Our 2020 vision is a future of refined economy, energy & environment.

Beyond just taking care of our environment, which is by itself a huge undertaking, being sustainable begins with:

The key to creating sustainable communities lies in forging partnerships with all sectors — including local, state and federal governments, businesses, academia, religious institutions, non-profit organizations, etc.

Our project, SB2020, demonstrating authentic sustainability for an entire community (in this case Boulder County, Colorado) is intended to offer a replicable model for the rest of the country and the world.

Paradigm Nouveau Foundation is pleased to unveil SB2020 as a Clinton Global Initiative commitment. Our official Clinton Global Initiative commitment is as follows:

Paradigm Nouveau commits to assist Boulder, Colorado in becoming an economically, ecologically and equitably sustainable community by 2020. This will be achieved by developing an innovative locally-generated financial vehicle that provides essential financing for sustainable community development projects and by establishing media-based grassroots leadership for engaging and educating the citizens of Boulder. Central to our commitment is the goal of developing a replicable model that can be applied in other communities.
